Welcome Village to become a reality
Did you catch the news last week? It was extremely exciting to have Premier Ed Stelmach and Honourable Yvonne Fritz, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, announce a wonderful grant for the YMCA.
The Welcome Village will become a reality! Two years of hard work by Franco Savoia, our CEO and his Housing Team of Joan Baker, Jen Paton and Scott Smillie has yielded a grant from the Province of Alberta that is almost $25 million. With our other partners - the City of Edmonton, Capital Region Housing Corporation, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and Inner City Youth Development Association, this Phase One component of the City's Boyle Renaissance Project becomes a reality.

The most important investment - your health
For the past 2-3 months most conversations at the Y and elsewhere turns to serious concerns about the worldwide economic downturn and turmoil. Where will it end? How will the Alberta economy be affected? Will we be able to retire as we had planned? What happens to those who are already retired? Sometimes in a serious jest, some indicate that their plan 55 is now "plan 95."
I find some irony in the concerns of the economy on our retirement. We do need to be concerned about whether our investments will provide us with the economic resources to enjoy our retirement. But there is something much more fundamental that we take for granted-our health.

The benefits & tips on buying one
Several years ago, I was teaching fitness classes, working out on a cross-trainer, and biking or walking five to six days a week, 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Given this regimen, I could not understand why I was not feeling stronger, losing body fat or achieving peak cardiovascular condition. A friend lent me her heart rate monitor for a week. At first, I used it somewhat skeptically. I'd always thought heart rate monitors were only for elite athletes. Wow, was I wrong!
